Meet our faculty

Sophia Stoney

Sophia Stoney is a pianist and teacher in the Ottawa/Gatineau region.

Her lessons focus on developing a strong technical foundation through efficient and

structured classical training, as well as nurturing musical growth through guiding students

in discovering and playing music they love.

Ms. Stoney is experienced in preparing students for auditions and exams. Her students

have been accepted to university piano performance programs and conservatory

programs, including those at the Conservatoire de Musique du Québec. They have

successfully taken part in Royal Conservatory exams, national and international

competitions, music festivals, and summer piano institutes, including the Steinway

Competition, Kiwanis festival, Ottawa Piano Festival, and the uOttawa Summer Piano

Academy.

Ms. Stoney holds a Bachelor’s degree in piano performance from the University of

Victoria, where she studied with Eva Solar-Kinderman and Michelle Mares, and a

Master’s degree in piano performance from the University of Ottawa, studying with

Andrew Tunis and Dr. Leopoldo Erice. She has studied collaborative piano with the

Lafayette String Quartet,

Penderecki String Quartet, and the AYR Trio. She has performed for artists such as world

renowned harpsichordist Colin Tilney, Jerome Lowenthal of the Juilliard School, and

David Lutz of the University of Music in Vienna.

She also holds pedagogy certifications from the Suzuki Association and the Gorin

Institute of Piano Pedagogy. She currently serves as a coordinator for the Suzuki Piano

Association of Ottawa and Gatineau.
